As a child, Debbi Fields loved to make cookies. She saved pennies to buy the best ingredients. Years later, she yearned to define herself beyond that of wife and mother, and in 1977, she decided to start her own business: Mrs. Fields Chocolate Chippery. Midway through opening day, she had yet to make a single sale. So she took her cookies to the streets and handed them out for free. Needless to say, sales picked up substantially since then.
Her passion for cookies translated into her passion for business. Fields’ story is now a Harvard Business School case study on business efficiency, and she authored the first cookbook to top the New York Times bestseller list. Fields sold the business in 1993, but her cookies are still sold in the nearly 390 Mrs. Fields® locations in the United States and 80 locations internationally.
